Topgolf embarked on a visionary journey to revolutionize the in-bay ball dispenser unit as an integral component of the "Bay of the Future" initiative. Our mission was to create a solution capable of storing and dispensing a minimum of 3,000 RFID-enabled golf balls daily, while also integrating a cutting-edge LG WebOS display for immersive augmented reality gaming experiences. Reliability and ease of maintenance were paramount.

Solution

Topgolf embarked on a groundbreaking collaboration with Frog Design, renowned for their work on Apple's pioneering products, to develop initial proof of concepts. Subsequently, partnering with IN2 Innovation refined and crystallized the design, leading to engineering prototypes rigorously tested in multiple high-volume Topgolf venues. Through iterative enhancements, the ultimate engineering design entered manufacturing in late 2020 by IN2 International, incorporating PLC controllers from Siemens and WebOS displays from LG. By December 2023, this innovative solution had been successfully deployed in over 95 Topgolf venues worldwide, supporting over 9,000 play bays.

The Topgolf Next Generation Ball Dispenser epitomizes a holistic approach to hardware, component, and software engineering, driving Topgolf's digital bay experience to new heights by delivering immersive 3D augmented reality games.

This innovative system has enabled the successful launch of award-winning games, including:

-- Angry Birds: Leveraging Rovio's immensely popular digital game, players engage in a thrilling augmented reality rendition, adding an exciting twist to the classic gameplay.
-- Jewel Jam: A captivating game that challenges players to strategically match gems in a dynamic and visually stunning augmented reality environment, offering endless entertainment.
-- Virtual Courses: Transporting players to renowned golf courses like Pebble Beach, this game provides a realistic and exhilarating experience, allowing players to virtually play 18 holes on world-famous courses from the comfort of their bay.
